Pakistan Leaders Hail US-Mediated Ceasefire with India, Call it a 'New Beginning'
Islamabad, May 10 — Pakistan's top leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and key political figures, welcomed the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan announced on Saturday, expressing hope that it will usher in a new chapter of peace and stability in the region.Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took to social media platform X to express his gratitude to the United States for facilitating the breakthrough. “We thank President Trump for his leadership and proactive role for peace in the region. Pakistan appreciates the United States for facilitating this outcome, which we have accepted in the interest of regional peace and stability,” he wrote.
He also acknowledged the role played by US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, saying their contributions were “valuable for peace in South Asia”.
Sharif described the ceasefire as “a new beginning” in resolving longstanding regional issues. “Pakistan believes this marks a new beginning in the resolution of issues that have plagued the region and prevented its journey toward peace, prosperity and stability,” he added.
Nawaz Sharif: "Pakistan Prefers Peace, But Can Defend Itself"
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, elder brother of Shehbaz Sharif and head of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), also commented on the development. Reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to peace, he said, “Pakistan is a peace-loving country and prefers peace, but also knows how to defend itself.”Nawaz congratulated Pakistan’s civil and military leadership, saying, “Thanks be to Allah Almighty for making Pakistan proud. I congratulate the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shahbaz Sharif, the Chief of Army Staff, General Syed Asim Munir, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Sindhu, and the armed forces of Pakistan.”
Bhutto Zardari Applauds Diplomacy
Pakistan People’s Party chief and former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari lauded the diplomatic efforts behind the ceasefire. “War, violence and aggression are never the answer. Now that both India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire & dialogue, we welcome this as a victory for diplomacy,” he said on X. He also thanked the USA, Saudi Arabia (KSA), and other countries for their roles in achieving what he termed a “historic milestone”.Bhutto added, “As a Pakistani, I could not be more proud of our people, our army and especially our Air Force.”
PTI and Provincial Leaders Echo Support
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Gohar Ali Khan called the ceasefire a positive step. Speaking to Geo News, he said, “Our response forced India to come up with the white flag (peace).” He described Pakistan's handling of the situation as something the nation can take pride in.Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also took to X to commend the leadership and armed forces. “Prime Minister Shehbaz, Army chief General Munir, Pakistan Armed Forces, and my father, Nawaz Sharif, have made the nation proud and shown the world that Pakistan is in safe and patriotic hands,” she said.
Ishaq Dar Confirms Ceasefire
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar was the first to publicly announce the agreement. “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!” he posted.The announcement followed intense military exchanges over recent days, culminating in the ceasefire agreement mediated with US involvement. Leaders across Pakistan’s political spectrum have presented a unified front, projecting the ceasefire as a diplomatic and strategic success.
