Islamabad, May 11 — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan expressed his gratitude to the country's political leadership, including both coalition partners and the opposition, for their "exemplary" unity during the four-day military confrontation between Pakistan and India.
In a late-night address to the nation on Saturday, Sharif emphasized the importance of pursuing "peaceful negotiations" to address the longstanding issues between India and Pakistan, notably the sharing of water resources and the Kashmir conflict. His comments came after both nations reached an understanding on May 10 to cease all military actions on land, air, and sea, with immediate effect.
Sharif affirmed Pakistan's positive response to the understanding, reiterating the country’s commitment to regional peace. He also extended his gratitude to international diplomatic efforts, particularly from friendly nations like the US, the UK, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who played a crucial role in de-escalating tensions between the two countries.
Notably, Sharif acknowledged China's support, describing it as a "time-tested" and "trustworthy" ally during this period of heightened conflict. He stated that Pakistan’s national unity and the professionalism of its armed forces were key to the country's success during this challenging time.
Sharif hailed the success of Pakistan's military operation, “Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos,” which he claimed was conducted in response to India's actions with utmost professionalism. He proudly declared that Pakistan's military forces had demonstrated the nation’s resilience, referring to them as brave, self-possessing, and prudent.
Additionally, Sharif revealed that Pakistan had offered to join a credible investigation into the recent Pahalgam attack, which resulted in significant loss of life, but noted that India had not responded positively to this offer.
In recognition of the armed forces' efforts, Sharif declared Sunday, May 11, as Youm-e-Tashakkur (Day of Thanks), a day for the nation to reflect on the success of Pakistan’s response to India’s actions. He expressed thanks to Allah for the "victory," honoring the bravery of the Pakistani Army and marking the day as a tribute to the nation's military achievements.
Sharif concluded by stating, “We are grateful to Allah for this success, which has made us victorious.” The Prime Minister asserted that Pakistan’s armed forces had delivered a "full response" under "Operation Banyan Marsus" to India's military actions.
