Mumbai, Feb 27 – Union Minister Piyush Goyal has strongly refuted claims that farmers in Punjab are responsible for the severe pollution in Delhi, calling such assertions "ridiculous." Speaking at an event organized by the IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Mumbai, the Commerce and Industry Minister urged people to apply logic before drawing such conclusions.
“For Delhi, don't believe anybody who tells you it's the farmers of Punjab who cause the pollution in Delhi," Goyal stated. He questioned how pollution could travel 500 kilometers, bypassing the high-rises of Gurgaon, and reach the capital.
While clarifying that he does not support stubble burning, Goyal emphasized that it is unfair to place the entire blame on farmers. Stubble burning, a practice where farmers clear fields after the summer harvest, is often cited as a major contributor to Delhi’s deteriorating air quality. However, Goyal highlighted that other factors, such as vehicle emissions and construction activities, play a significant role in urban pollution.
He urged businesses and individuals to adopt sustainable practices, including electric mobility and precast construction, which he said offer both environmental and cost advantages. "Rather than blaming someone else, can we think about our role? Can we think of electric mobility, personal use, or our company's use?" he asked.
Goyal also pointed out the stark contrast in urban cleanliness between Indian cities and global hubs like Dubai and Singapore, urging industries and authorities to address pollution and infrastructure issues proactively.
With Delhi’s air quality frequently hitting hazardous levels, concerns over public health continue to grow. Goyal's remarks highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to tackling pollution rather than placing blame on a single source.
