New Delhi, April 3 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-nation tour Thursday, beginning with Thailand for the sixth BIMSTEC Summit, followed by a visit to Sri Lanka — his first since the election of its new president.
He highlighted the strategic significance of India’s North Eastern region in the BIMSTEC framework, noting its central role due to geographical proximity.
Referring to President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s visit to India in December, Modi stated that his trip would offer an opportunity to review progress on the joint vision of "Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future" and to provide guidance for realizing shared objectives.
Strengthening Regional Partnerships at BIMSTEC
In his departure statement, PM Modi underscored the growing importance of BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) as a platform fostering regional development, connectivity, and economic progress in the Bay of Bengal region over the last decade.He highlighted the strategic significance of India’s North Eastern region in the BIMSTEC framework, noting its central role due to geographical proximity.
“I look forward to meeting the leaders of the BIMSTEC countries and engaging productively to further strengthen our collaboration with the interests of our people in mind,” the Prime Minister said.
Bilateral Talks with Thai Leadership
While in Thailand, PM Modi is set to engage with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and other Thai leaders.
