Delhi to Benefit from Ayushman Bharat Insurance and Health Infrastructure Missions
New Delhi, April 11 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday praised the rollout of two key central health initiatives in Delhi, calling it a transformative moment for the national capital. The implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) marks a significant expansion of healthcare access for Delhi residents.
Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi remarked,
“This mission of the double engine government is going to be very beneficial for lakhs of brothers and sisters in Delhi. I am delighted that people of Delhi, too, can now receive treatment under the Ayushman scheme.”
Key MoUs Signed Between Delhi and Centre
The first major step came on April 5, when a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to implement AB-PMJAY in Delhi. This scheme provides insurance coverage for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation expenses for economically weaker sections of society.
Building on that momentum, a second MoU was signed on Thursday, enabling the rollout of PM-ABHIM in the city. Launched in October 2021, PM-ABHIM aims to bolster public health infrastructure and prepare the system for future pandemics and large-scale health emergencies.
Shift from Previous Stance
These developments signify a notable shift from the earlier stance of the AAP-led Delhi government, which had previously declined to implement these central schemes.
Political Reaction
Union Health Minister J P Nadda highlighted the political impact of rejecting such welfare schemes. Speaking on Thursday, he stated,
“State governments opposed to these programmes are being voted out by people.”
The implementation of both schemes underlines a new phase of cooperation between the Centre and the Delhi government, with potential benefits for thousands of residents through improved access to healthcare services and stronger public health preparedness.
