New Delhi, February 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday described the recently concluded Maha Kumbh as a reflection of India's "newly awakened consciousness," likening it to a nation moving forward after shedding a "slavery mindset."
In a blog post, Modi called the grand congregation a "mahayagna of unity," emphasizing how the scale of participation surpassed all expectations. He stated that the sheer number of devotees taking a holy dip at Sangam signified India's resurgence with renewed energy, marking the beginning of a transformative era for the nation.
The prime minister also expressed his gratitude while offering an apology to the sacred rivers—Mother Ganga, Mother Yamuna, and Mother Saraswati—as well as to devotees, whom he regards as divine, for any shortcomings in the arrangements. Acknowledging the challenge of organizing such an enormous event, he recognized the efforts of the administration and all those involved in ensuring its success.
The Maha Kumbh witnessed an unprecedented turnout, with the Uttar Pradesh government reporting that over 65 crore pilgrims visited Prayagraj since the event commenced on January 13. However, the massive congregation also faced tragic incidents, including a stampede that resulted in the loss of at least 30 lives.
Modi extended special praise to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, noting that as an MP from the state, he felt proud of the way the administration, under Adityanath’s leadership, managed the event. He lauded the efforts of sanitation workers, police personnel, boatmen, drivers, and cooks, stating that their dedication and service made the Maha Kumbh a success.
Highlighting the uniqueness of this year’s event, the prime minister remarked, "What has never happened in the past few decades happened this time. It has laid the foundation for many coming centuries." He further noted that the number of devotees who participated nearly doubled the population of the United States, surpassing all prior estimates based on previous Kumbhs.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this Maha Kumbh, Modi observed, was the active participation of young devotees. He expressed optimism, stating, "This boosts the faith that India's young generation is the carrier of our values and culture. They understand their responsibility in preserving and advancing it, and they are committed to doing so."
The Maha Kumbh 2025 will be remembered not only for its record-breaking attendance but also for its spiritual and cultural significance, as India moves forward with renewed conviction.
