PM Modi Hails Passage of Waqf (Amendment) Bill as Watershed Moment for Socio-Economic Justice

New Delhi, April 4 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday described the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill in Parliament as a “watershed moment” in India’s journey toward socio-economic justice, transparency, and inclusive growth.

Taking to social media platform X, the Prime Minister said the newly passed legislations will significantly benefit those who have long remained marginalised and voiceless in the system.

Focus on Transparency and Marginalised Communities

Modi criticised the Waqf system for being historically marred by a lack of transparency and accountability. He highlighted how this had particularly impacted poor Muslims, Pasmanda Muslims, and Muslim women, depriving them of equal rights and opportunities.

“The passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill by both Houses of Parliament marks a watershed moment in our collective quest for socio-economic justice, transparency and inclusive growth,” Modi stated.
He emphasised that the new legal framework would be modern, just, and more responsive to the principles of social equity, ultimately fostering a stronger and more compassionate India.

Commitment to Inclusivity

Reaffirming his government's commitment to the dignity of every citizen, the Prime Minister said the focus will remain on building a more inclusive society. He added that the newly enacted legislation is a step forward in ensuring that governance structures become more participative and rights-oriented.

“On a larger note, we remain committed to prioritising the dignity of every citizen,” he wrote, calling it a foundation for building a stronger and inclusive nation.

Acknowledgement of Parliamentary Contributions

Modi extended his gratitude to all Members of Parliament who took part in the legislative process, including those who shared their views in parliamentary debates and committee meetings. He also thanked citizens who submitted inputs to the Parliamentary committee, stating that the process highlighted the importance of extensive public consultation and debate.

“Yet again, the importance of extensive debate and dialogue has been reaffirmed,” he remarked.

Parliamentary Milestone Amid Opposition Resistance

The Rajya Sabha passed the Bill on Thursday night, following the Lok Sabha’s approval a day earlier. Despite strong opposition from a united Opposition bloc, the government succeeded in securing the passage of the contentious legislation.

The enactment of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the repeal of the Mussalman Wakf Act represent a significant legislative shift aimed at restructuring and modernising Waqf management in the country.
