New Delhi, Feb 28: Renowned holistic health coach Luke Coutinho has lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to combat obesity, emphasizing the need for nationwide awareness and regulation on junk food. During his visit to an Anganwadi centre in Delhi on Friday, Coutinho echoed Modi’s call for healthier dietary choices and personal responsibility in tackling obesity.
In his monthly radio address, Mann Ki Baat, on Sunday, PM Modi urged citizens to reduce oil consumption by 10% and challenge 10 others to do the same. Strengthening his campaign, the prime minister on Monday nominated 10 prominent figures from various fields, including Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, business tycoon Anand Mahindra, and actor Mohanlal, to champion the cause against obesity.
Coutinho, co-founder of the Luke Coutinho Holistic Healing System, is currently in Delhi for a media conclave. Advocating for better nutritional habits, he identified three key areas that require attention:
- Early childhood nutrition – Ensuring children develop healthy eating habits from a young age.
- Widespread nutritional education – Making information accessible in multiple languages across India's diverse population.
- Promotion of local superfoods – Encouraging the inclusion of millets and other indigenous nutrient-rich foods in daily diets.
Supporting the national movement against obesity, he emphasized the need for personal responsibility, urging individuals to adopt healthier eating habits, engage in regular physical activity, and prioritize mental and emotional well-being.
He further stressed that reducing edible oil consumption is a crucial step, aligning with Modi’s appeal. "We need mindfulness and awareness. Promoting 'ghar-ka-khana' (home-cooked food) is essential. This initiative requires national unity, honoring the prime minister's vision, and taking responsibility to build a healthier India," Coutinho concluded.
India is witnessing a growing obesity crisis, particularly among children and adults due to sedentary lifestyles and excessive junk food consumption. Modi’s initiative aims to instill a culture of mindful eating and foster healthier living across the nation.
