Colombo, April 5 – In a significant gesture of appreciation and camaraderie, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Saturday conferred the country’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Mithra Vibhushana’ award, on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recognising his efforts in strengthening India-Sri Lanka bilateral relations.
A Symbol of Deepening Bilateral Ties
The award ceremony took place at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, where Prime Minister Modi received the honour amid a formal and symbolic setting. Expressing his gratitude, Modi said,The ‘Mithra Vibhushana’ award, instituted in February 2008 by then President Mahinda Rajapaksa, is reserved for foreign nationals who have rendered exceptional service in fostering friendly ties with Sri Lanka. Previous recipients include former Maldivian president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.“It is an honour for me to be awarded the Sri Lanka Mithra Vibhushana by President Dissanayake. It is also an honour for 1.4 billion Indians.”
A Medal Rich in Cultural Symbolism
The award comprises a citation and a silver medal worn around the neck, intricately designed with deep cultural and national symbolism:- Nine Sri Lankan gems (Navarathna) representing prosperity and diversity
- Emblems of the lotus, globe, sun, moon, and sheaves of rice reflecting harmony, global outlook, and renewal
- The Dharma Chakra, signifying the shared Buddhist heritage between the two nations
- The Pun Kalasa, a ceremonial pot adorned with rice sheaves, symbolising abundance and growth
A Diplomatic Milestone
Prime Minister Modi arrived in Colombo on Friday evening, following his participation in the BIMSTEC Summitheld in Bangkok, underscoring India’s continued commitment to regional cooperation and diplomacy.The conferral of the Mithra Vibhushana marks another milestone in India-Sri Lanka relations, reflecting a deepening partnership built on mutual respect, cultural ties, and shared vision for the region.
