PM Oli Warns Against Superficial Left Unity, Reaffirms Stand Against Monarchy.webp

Kathmandu, May 17—Nepal's Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli on Saturday warned against forging unity among leftist forces without a shared ideological framework, warning that such alliances could weaken the communist movement.

Speaking at an event in Kathmandu commemorating the 32nd death anniversary of former CPN-UML general secretary Madan Bhandari, Oli remarked, "It will be meaningless to bring those who have turned to many directions into leftist unity without proper ideological understanding."

Warning Against Divisive Politics

Oli highlighted a long-standing issue within the communist movement: the tendency to sow discord and oppose even just initiatives. He noted that many divisions within leftist ranks are not born out of ideological disagreements but are driven by personal ambitions.

"The tendency to oppose even the right thing and create discord has been evident in the communist movement throughout history. Even though there was no real ideological difference, divisive lines were drawn based on personal interests," he stated.

Legacy of Madan Bhandari and Vision for Nepal

Reflecting on Madan Bhandari's contributions, Oli emphasized the enduring relevance of the 'people's multi-party democracy' model introduced under Bhandari’s leadership. He described it as a cornerstone of national policy, addressing political democracy and economic, social, and human rights issues.

"It is on this foundation that we must work to fulfil the national aspiration of a prosperous Nepal and happy Nepalis," the Prime Minister affirmed.

Stand Against Monarchy and Appeal for Unity

Oli reiterated his party, CPN-UML’s, steadfast commitment to patriotism, national independence, and integrity. He dismissed recent efforts by pro-monarchy factions as futile and unacceptable.

"Any attempt to reinstate the monarchy is both impossible and unacceptable," Oli declared, referencing the agitation that began in March by groups demanding a return to monarchy and the re-establishment of Nepal as a Hindu state.

The movement has sparked widespread unrest across the country, resulting in violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

Concluding his address, Oli urged party members to move forward with unity and confidence amid growing political tensions.
