New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) – The second round of the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) pilot project officially began on January 9, 2025, as part of a broader initiative aimed at providing young professionals with valuable internship opportunities in top-tier companies. According to Minister of State for Corporate Affairs, Harish Malhotra, the first round of the scheme yielded impressive results, with partner companies extending 82,077 internship offers to 60,866 candidates.
The PMIS, introduced in the 2024-25 Union Budget, seeks to provide internships to one crore youth over the next five years across the country’s 500 leading companies. The pilot project, which kicked off in October 2024, had an initial target of offering 1.25 lakh internship opportunities within the fiscal year 2024-25. However, it exceeded expectations with more than 1.27 lakh opportunities provided by partner companies.
The initiative has sparked significant interest, receiving around 6.21 lakh applications from over 1.81 lakh candidates. By January 29, 2025, a total of 28,141 candidates had accepted internship offers, according to Malhotra's written response in the Rajya Sabha.
As the second round progresses, companies are actively refining their internship listings, both by posting new opportunities and adjusting unfilled ones to ensure broader participation and alignment with candidate qualifications.
The government aims to scale up the program, eventually impacting millions of young professionals and bridging the gap between educational training and real-world industry experience.
