Kottayam (Kerala), Feb 3 (PTI) – A civil police officer lost his life after allegedly being assaulted by a notorious history-sheeter in the early hours of Monday, authorities confirmed.
The deceased, Shyam Prasad (44), served as a police constable at Kottayam West Police Station. The alleged attacker, Jibin George, who has multiple criminal cases against him, has been taken into custody in connection with the incident, police said.
According to officials, the tragic incident unfolded at a wayside eatery, where Jibin was reportedly causing a disturbance. Shyam Prasad, who was returning home after duty, intervened and questioned him, leading to a violent attack by the accused.
Following the assault, Prasad collapsed on the spot. Bystanders rushed him to a nearby private hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
A patrolling team, led by the Kumarakom Station House Officer (SHO), arrived at the scene shortly after the attack. Upon spotting the police, Jibin attempted to flee but was swiftly apprehended, officials confirmed.
The accused's arrest will be officially recorded, and he will be presented before the court, authorities added.
