Police officers to be held accountable for major crimes in their jurisdiction: Punjab CM

Chandigarh, Feb 4 (PTI) – In a decisive move to strengthen law and order across the state, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that police officers would be held accountable for major crimes in their respective jurisdictions. During a meeting with the Commissioner of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police, Mann emphasized the importance of effective and responsive policing as a key strategy to combat crime.

According to an official statement, the Chief Minister expressed his confidence in the Punjab Police, one of the nation's most esteemed law enforcement agencies. He stressed that the force must continue its legacy of safeguarding national unity, integrity, and sovereignty, ensuring justice and preserving communal harmony, peace, and brotherhood.

Mann outlined his government's commitment to initiating substantial police reforms aimed at enhancing law enforcement and benefiting the public. "The hard-earned peace of Punjab must be maintained at all costs," he said, urging strict action against unlawful activities and declaring that offenders would not be spared.

Highlighting the urgent need to tackle drug abuse, the Chief Minister called for a mass movement against drugs, appealing to panchayats for their active involvement. He underscored the importance of dismantling drug supply chains and adopting a zero-tolerance policy towards the drug menace.

"Every day, I will monitor the action against drugs," Mann stated. "Youth in schools and colleges must be educated about the dangers of drug abuse." He also directed authorities to promptly seize the properties of drug smugglers and ensure that key figures in drug trafficking are brought to justice.

Further committing to the elimination of organized crime, Mann vowed that gangsters would face strict action. "Perpetrators of organized crime will not be allowed to flex their muscles in Punjab. They must be dealt with firmly," he asserted.

In addition to tackling major criminal activities, Mann also stressed the importance of addressing petty crimes. Police officers, he said, should focus on intelligence gathering and work towards delivering justice for ordinary citizens.

The Chief Minister also reiterated his government's determination to fight corruption within the police force. He called for the identification and strict action against "black sheep" in the department.

Mann emphasized the need for better coordination between the police and the public to combat crime and promote peace, progress, and prosperity in the state. Recalling the pivotal role played by Punjab Police in countering terrorism in the past, he called for renewed public support.

In a final directive, Mann instructed officers to conduct surprise inspections in their areas. These inspections, he said, should not be limited to fault-finding but should aim to streamline law enforcement operations, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency of Punjab Police and ensuring the safety of the state's residents.
