Police start probe into Rs 77 crore `fraud' at tri-services club on Navy's complaint

Mumbai, February 27: The Mumbai Police has launched an investigation into an alleged financial fraud amounting to ₹77.52 crore at the United Services Club (US Club) in Colaba, a prestigious 97-year-old tri-services establishment. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has taken over the case following a complaint filed at Cuffe Parade Police Station by a Navy captain under the direction of the Western Naval Command headquarters.

The financial irregularities came to light a few months ago during a routine audit, a Defence PRO stated. The audit, conducted as part of the club’s financial oversight, detected discrepancies, prompting a special audit by an external chartered accountant. Further scrutiny of the club’s financial records revealed significant anomalies, leading to the involvement of law enforcement agencies.

Authorities have now registered a First Information Report (FIR), and an independent special audit has been commissioned for deeper financial scrutiny. The Defence PRO emphasized that both the armed forces and the club management remain committed to upholding transparency and financial integrity. All necessary cooperation will be extended to the law enforcement and financial agencies to ensure accountability and justice.

The United Services Club, a historic institution serving the armed forces, has long maintained strict financial governance. However, this fraud investigation highlights the need for stringent financial oversight in such establishments.

Further updates on the investigation are awaited as authorities delve deeper into the case.
