Prayagraj, February 28: Following the conclusion of the grand Maha Kumbh on February 26, a 15-day special cleanliness drive commenced at the Mela grounds on Friday. The initiative, launched by the Uttar Pradesh government, aims to restore the sanctity of the site after the massive 45-day event.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had earlier honored sanitation workers for their dedicated service during the Maha Kumbh and instructed officials to ensure a thorough clean-up of the area. Leading this extensive drive is Special Officer Akanksha Rana, with active participation from ‘Swachhata Mitras’ and ‘Ganga Sewa Doots,’ the government stated in an official release.
Extensive Cleaning Efforts Underway
Over the next two weeks, the clean-up operation will focus on the Sangam ghats, roads within the Mela grounds, and both permanent and temporary infrastructure. The Maha Kumbh, known as the world's largest human congregation, saw an estimated 66 crore devotees taking a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam.Maintaining hygiene and cleanliness was a top priority throughout the festival, with over 15,000 sanitation workers and 2,000 Ganga Sewa Doots deployed to keep the premises clean. To ensure this cleanliness continues post-event, the chief minister has emphasized sustained sanitation efforts across Prayagraj, ensuring a sacred and pristine environment for pilgrims even after the festival.
Dismantling and Waste Management
As part of the drive, 1.5 lakh temporary toilets installed for the Maha Kumbh will be dismantled and removed. Additionally, all waste generated during the festival is being systematically processed at the Baswar plant in Naini. The clean-up efforts also include the removal of:- Temporary pipelines laid by the Urban and Rural Water Corporation
- Streetlights installed by the electricity department
- Tents and pavilions used by seers and Kalpvasis
Citywide Sanitation and Greenery Enhancement
Apart from the Mela grounds, the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation is working to improve overall sanitation and greenery in the city. These efforts are aimed at maintaining Prayagraj’s aesthetic and environmental appeal, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for visitors and residents alike.The Maha Kumbh 2025 witnessed unprecedented participation, and this post-event clean-up drive stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to sustainability and cleanliness in the region.
