Odisha Celebrates its Formation Day with Enthusiasm, Remembering its Rich Cultural Heritage

Historical Significance of Utkal Dibasa
On April 1, 1938, Odisha was officially recognized as a separate province based on linguistic identity, created by carving out regions from the then provinces of Bihar, Bengal, and Madras. The day commemorates Odisha's unique cultural identity and contributions to the nation.
President Murmu Celebrates Odisha's Rich Heritage
President Murmu, herself hailing from Odisha, expressed heartfelt pride in the state's rich traditions and cultural heritage. In her message, she remarked:
"It is an occasion to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Odisha and the remarkable contribution of its people in various fields. The warm and hospitable people of Odisha have worked hard for the progress of the state while preserving its glorious traditions."
Highlighting Odisha’s significant role in India's freedom struggle, she added:
"Odisha has played an important role in the freedom struggle and produced several makers of modern India. I pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannath for peace and prosperity of Odisha!"
Prime Minister Modi Commends Odisha’s Contributions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to convey his wishes, underscoring the pride India takes in Odisha’s vibrant history, literature, and music. He wrote:
"Warm wishes on Utkala Dibasa! This day is a fitting tribute to Odisha’s glorious culture. India takes pride in Odisha's history, literature and music. Odisha's people are hardworking and have excelled in diverse fields. Over the last year, the Centre and Odisha Governments are working extensively to further the state’s progress."
Odisha Government's Celebrations and Cultural Initiatives
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi began the day's celebrations by garlanding the statue of Odisha’s iconic figure Madhusudan Das near Raj Bhavan and attending a commemorative event. Paying tribute, Majhi stated on social media:
"A humble tribute to the great men who made immense sacrifices for the formation of a separate Odisha state and enhanced the glory of our language, literature and culture. On this day, let us further strengthen our resolve to build a healthy and developed Odisha."

The Odisha government has additionally launched 'Odia Paksha', a two-week celebration from April 1 to April 14, to reinforce and promote Odia language and culture across the state. The Chief Minister encouraged the people, saying:
"Let us become Odia in mind, soul and heart. Let us make Odia language, literature, food, clothes and culture a part of our daily lives and build a proud Odisha."
Political Parties Join Celebrations Across Odisha
Various political parties enthusiastically joined the celebrations. State BJP president Manmohan Samal led party workers in events commemorating Utkal Dibasa.
The opposition BJD also organized programs across all constituencies. Leader of the Opposition Naveen Patnaik highlighted the sacrifices behind Odisha's formation, noting:
"Odisha is our mother, land and love. The separate state has been formed due to the efforts and sacrifices of many great personalities. Let us remember them and follow the path shown by them and take Odisha to the peak of development."
The Congress party also marked the occasion with celebratory events statewide.

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed admiration for Odisha’s distinct cultural heritage, stating:

Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati joined in extending greetings, emphasizing the significance of the day.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, in his message, recognized Odisha’s beauty and culture, stating:
