Prohibitory orders clamped in Madurai for two days

Madurai (Tamil Nadu), Feb 3 (PTI) – The Madurai district administration has imposed prohibitory orders in Thiruparankundram and surrounding areas for two days, restricting mass gatherings and protests. The move comes in response to the Hindu Munnani and other organizations planning an agitation in the hill town on February 4.

District Collector M S Sangeetha issued the order under Section 163 of BNSS (earlier Section 144 of the CrPC), which will be in effect from 6 AM on February 3 until midnight on February 5. The restrictions aim to prevent potential law and order issues arising from the scheduled protest.

The Hindu Munnani has organized the agitation to oppose certain individuals consuming non-vegetarian food on Thiruparankundram hill, where the revered shrine of Lord Subrahmanya Swamy is located. However, the police have denied permission for the protest in front of the temple, and the prohibitory order is expected to discourage participation from individuals and organizations across the southern districts.

In preparation for maintaining peace, over 300 police personnel have been deployed around Thiruparankundram hill, with barricades set up to prevent public access to the mountain. Senior officers from Theni, Dindigul, and Virudhunagar districts have been brought in to oversee security measures.

Despite the tension, both Hindus and Muslims will be allowed to continue worship at the temple and mosque on the hill, though under strict police monitoring. Authorities remain on high alert to prevent any disturbances.
