Protest Erupts in Thane After Woman's Tragic Death at Garbage Segregation Centre

Citizens Demand Justice and Compensation; TMC Promises Closure of Facility

Thane, April 1 – Tensions ran high outside the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Tuesday as angry citizens staged a protest with the body of 48-year-old Rajshri Jadhav, who died after getting entangled in an excavator at a local garbage segregation centre.

The incident occurred on Monday evening at the CP Talao garbage segregation centre. Jadhav, a resident of Bhim Nagar, was reportedly collecting scrap when she became trapped in the machinery. Protesters alleged that following the fatal accident, the excavator operator attempted to dispose of her body in a garbage dumper. The body was recovered only when the dumper driver noticed it.

Protest Sparks Heavy Police Deployment

Around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a large group of citizens gathered outside the TMC headquarters to voice their outrage and press their demands. The protest, which lasted about 90 minutes, created a tense situation that led to a heavy police presence at the site.

The demonstrators demanded three key actions:
  • Immediate closure of the garbage segregation centre
  • Financial compensation for Jadhav’s family
  • A government job for a member of her household

TMC Assures Action and Support

Addressing the crowd, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Manish Joshi called the incident “unfortunate” and assured swift action. He announced that the segregation centre would be permanently closed, with all garbage cleared from the site within 15 days.

Joshi also committed to providing compensation to the deceased’s family and promised employment to one of her kin.

Following the civic body's assurances, the protest was called off, and Jadhav’s body was taken for cremation.
