Punjab Power Minister Urges Farmers to Remain Vigilant Against Electrical Hazards

Chandigarh, April 5 — In a proactive move to ensure fire safety during the wheat harvesting season, the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has established a dedicated control room to handle electrical emergencies, especially those involving low-hanging wires that pose a fire risk to wheat fields.

Power Minister Harbhajan Singh announced the initiative, emphasizing the importance of quick response to prevent fire outbreaks caused by electrical sparks. He highlighted that loose or sagging wires near wheat fields can lead to severe damage if not reported and addressed in time.

Emergency Contact Channels for Farmers

To facilitate timely intervention, farmers have been urged to report any such electrical threats to their nearest sub-divisional office, PSPCL complaint centre, or the newly set up control room. Emergency contacts include:
  • Mobile: 96461-06835, 96461-06836
  • Toll-free helpline: 1912
Additionally, visuals of low-hanging wires or sparking incidents, accompanied by location details, can be shared via WhatsApp on 96461-06836 for rapid assessment and rectification.

Safety Precautions Advised

Minister Singh also advised farmers to strictly avoid storing harvested wheat under power lines or near transformers. He warned against the dangers of smoking cigarettes or beedis in and around wheat fields due to the increased risk of fire.

Farmers have been further encouraged to operate harvester combines only during daylight hours and to be extra cautious of any spark or malfunction from the machinery.

Punjab Targets 124 Lakh Metric Tonnes in Wheat Procurement

The wheat procurement season officially commenced on April 1, with Punjab setting an ambitious target to procure 124 lakh metric tonnes of wheat. Authorities are prioritizing safety measures to protect this crucial phase of the agricultural cycle.

The PSPCL’s latest initiative underscores the state’s commitment to ensuring both farmer safety and uninterrupted procurement during the peak harvest period.
