Pune cops bust 'bail surety' racket; 11, including two lawyers, arrested

Pune, Feb 3 (PTI) – In a significant crackdown on a fraudulent bail surety racket, Pune police have arrested 11 individuals, including two lawyers, for their alleged involvement in forging documents to secure bail for accused persons.

According to an official statement on Monday, the gang operated by creating fake documents and counterfeit stamps to facilitate the release of individuals who struggled to find legitimate sureties.

"A surety guarantees the presence of an accused in court after being granted bail. Since many people are unwilling to stand as guarantors for accused individuals, this gang targeted their families and provided bail sureties using forged Aadhaar cards, ration cards, and other documents in exchange for money," the official explained.

The operation came to light on January 4 when police, acting on a tip-off, arrested six individuals: Santosh Kumar Teland, Aslam Sayyed, Yogesh Jadhav, Darshan Shah, Piraji Shinde, and Gopal Kangane. Among them, Sayyed and Jadhav were identified as lawyers. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of five more persons linked to the racket.

Authorities are now probing the full extent of the scam and identifying accused individuals who may have secured bail through fraudulent means. The investigation remains ongoing.
