Bhagwant Mann Highlights Punjab’s Strategic Role, Seeks Centre’s Attention

Chandigarh, May 10 – Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday strongly advocated for a special financial package for the state, citing its historic role as the "sword arm of the nation" and its frontline position in times of national conflict. His remarks came during an all-party meeting convened by Punjab Governor and UT Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria.

Addressing the media alongside Governor Kataria, Mann stated, “Whether it's war or any other exigency, Punjab and its people are always on the forefront. We bear the first brunt during escalations.” He emphasized that despite being the food bowl and the sword arm of India, Punjab’s contributions have long been overlooked.

Demand for Special Financial and Structural Support

Mann urged the Centre to extend a special economic package to Punjab, similar to those provided to Jammu and Kashmir and certain hill states. He announced that his government would also demand border area allowances for essential service providers including doctors, teachers, Anganwadi workers, and others posted in districts close to the Indo-Pak border.

The chief minister further disclosed that he would begin a visit to border areas starting Sunday to assess the ground reality in the wake of heightened tensions with Pakistan. “Our border regions suffer the most during such escalations,” he said.

Focus on Anti-Drone Systems and Civil Defence

Mann assured that steps would be taken to enhance security infrastructure, including the deployment of anti-drone systems to counter cross-border threats. Governor Kataria echoed the sentiment, warning that despite the recent ceasefire, India cannot afford to lower its guard due to ongoing threats like cross-border drug smuggling via drones.

He also stressed the importance of civil defence, suggesting that trained civil defence teams could play a crucial role during both wartime and peacetime emergencies.

Political Consensus on Special Package and Youth Quotas

Political unity was visible during the meeting, with leaders across parties supporting the call for a special package. Governor Kataria revealed that participants proposed a joint effort to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and formally present the demand.

Kataria also suggested job reservation quotas for youth from border regions, underlining the need to empower local communities affected most by conflict and unrest.

BJP Joins the Call for Economic Aid

Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar supported the demand, highlighting the adverse impact of conflict on Punjab’s economy. “Our trade and business suffer immensely during every conflict. Punjab has always paid a heavy price in terms of life and economy. A special package is essential to mitigate these losses,” Jakhar stated.

Unity and Caution in Challenging Times

In a related interfaith meeting, Governor Kataria called for societal unity in support of the armed forces. He also warned against rumour-mongering on social media, advocating firm action against those spreading misinformation during such sensitive times.

The meeting reflected a collective call for national solidarity and tangible support for Punjab, reinforcing its pivotal role in India’s defence framework.
