Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and Partap Singh Bajwa voice support, urge transparency and vigilance
Chandigarh, May 10 — Punjab Congress leaders have welcomed the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, calling it a significant development for regional peace while underscoring the importance of national security and transparency.Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring lauded the decision, expressing hope that the neighbouring country has finally realised the futility of sponsoring terrorism. The ceasefire, effective from 5 PM on Saturday, was announced by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri following a conversation between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) of both countries.
This development followed intense military engagements between the two sides and was brokered after talks mediated by US President Donald Trump, who declared a "full and immediate" ceasefire between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
Warring credited India’s defence forces for their swift and decisive action, saying, "Our forces brought Pakistan to its knees within 48 hours." He reiterated that India never desired war and clarified that military action was strictly against terrorist training camps, not civilian targets. He accused Pakistan of escalating the situation by attacking civilians.
Warring also supported Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s call for a special all-party meeting and a session of Parliament, stating, "We would like to know what have been the terms and conditions of the ceasefire. It is vital that the national interest has been kept paramount."
Border Stability Critical for Punjab: Bajwa
Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, also welcomed the ceasefire, calling it a positive move for lasting peace. "Peace along the borders is in the interest of both nations, especially for the people of Punjab, which shares a 553-km border with Pakistan," Bajwa said.He emphasized that peace and national security must go hand in hand, warning that "terrorism and cross-border infiltration cannot be tolerated under any circumstances." Bajwa urged Pakistan to demonstrate genuine intent by dismantling terror infrastructure on its soil.
Highlighting the benefits of a peaceful border, Bajwa added, "A stable border means better lives for our farmers, traders and families living in frontier areas. Stability is not just diplomacy; it is a necessity."
The statements by Punjab’s Congress leadership reflect a cautious optimism — welcoming peace but insisting on vigilance and national interest as non-negotiables.
