Malware Targets Indian Users Amid Tensions with Pakistan

Chandigarh, May 12 — In the wake of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Punjab Police has issued a public cybersecurity alert, warning citizens about a new and dangerous malware dubbed 'Dance of the Hillary', allegedly being spread by hackers based in Pakistan.

The advisory highlights the malware's circulation through popular digital platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and email, with the intention of compromising personal and banking data of Indian users.

Malware Capabilities and Threats

According to the police, the malware is capable of stealing sensitive information, including passwords, financial credentials, and personal data. Even more concerning, the malicious software may grant remote access to infected devices, potentially enabling hackers to take full control of a victim’s system.

“Do not click unknown links or messages from strangers. Stay alert, stay secure,” the Punjab Police cautioned in a post on social media platform X.

Urgent Cyber Safety Recommendations

To safeguard against potential breaches, authorities have urged the public to:
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links or messages, particularly from unknown sources.
  • Refrain from downloading files shared by unfamiliar contacts.
  • Stay updated with official advisories and maintain robust antivirus protection on all devices.

Security Context: Post-Ceasefire Precautions

The warning comes shortly after India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire understanding on Saturday, following four days of intense cross-border drone and missile exchanges. While the situation on the border shows signs of de-escalation, authorities are now focusing on cybersecurity threats that may arise in parallel to physical confrontations.

The Punjab Police continues to monitor the situation and has appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious digital activity.
