Punjab to Deploy Anti-Drone Technology to Combat Cross-Border Smuggling of Drugs and Arms

In a significant step to strengthen border security, the Punjab government announced on Tuesday plans to deploy advanced anti-drone technology aimed at preventing the smuggling of narcotics, arms, and ammunition from across the border.

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, who is heading a cabinet sub-committee dedicated to tackling the drug menace in the state, witnessed demonstrations of anti-drone technology by three companies in Mohali. He was accompanied by Cabinet Minister Aman Arora, who emphasized the urgent need for effective surveillance methods to curb illegal cross-border activities originating from Pakistan.

Combating the Cross-Border Drug Threat

Addressing the media, Minister Arora highlighted the critical challenge of narcotics and arms entering Punjab via drone operations. He noted that while safeguarding the border is primarily the responsibility of the Border Security Force (BSF) and the central government, gaps in detection remain.

"The BSF has jurisdiction of 50 kilometers along the border, but over the past several years, we have observed that their success rate in stopping smuggling is not 100 percent," said Arora, reinforcing the role of Punjab Police as the second line of defense.

Technology as a Solution

Minister Cheema expressed confidence that adopting anti-drone technology will significantly enhance the state's capabilities to intercept illegal shipments of narcotics and weapons.

"We are ready to adopt any measure necessary to achieve a drug-free Punjab," Cheema asserted, adding, "Deploying anti-drone technology with the Punjab Police will strengthen our anti-drug campaign substantially."

He also assured citizens that the Punjab Police will closely coordinate with central government agencies for seamless integration and effective utilization of this technology.

Punjab Government's Commitment to a Drug-Free State

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann recently set an ambitious goal, instructing authorities to ensure Punjab becomes drug-free within three months. To achieve this objective, the state government established a dedicated five-member cabinet sub-committee tasked with monitoring and coordinating efforts to eradicate drug trafficking and addiction from Punjab.

The adoption of anti-drone technology represents a key strategic decision within the broader initiative to eliminate drug-related crimes and reinforce security across Punjab's borders.
