Lucknow, Feb 4 (PTI) – Mahant Satyendra Das, the head priest of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya, remains in critical condition after suffering a brain stroke. He is currently receiving treatment at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow, hospital authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
The 85-year-old seer was initially treated elsewhere before being shifted to SGPGI on Sunday. According to an official statement from the hospital, Das, who is diabetic and hypertensive, suffered a stroke and is now in the Neurology ICU. While his vitals remain stable, his condition is still critical, and he is under continuous medical observation.
Mahant Satyendra Das has played a pivotal role in the history of the Ram temple. He was serving as the priest of the makeshift temple when the Babri Masjid was demolished on December 6, 1992, having assumed the position just nine months earlier.
Choosing a spiritual path at the age of 20, he has dedicated his life to the service of the temple and is recognized as its longest-serving head priest. A respected member of the Nirvani Akhara, Das is also known for his accessibility to devotees and the media, often sharing insights on Ayodhya and the developments surrounding the Ram temple.
His hospitalization has drawn concern from devotees and religious leaders across the country. Medical experts at SGPGI continue to closely monitor his condition.
