Nagpur, Feb 26: A crucial 215-run partnership between Karun Nair (86) and Danish Malewar (138*), followed by an unfortunate run-out mix-up, helped Vidarbha recover from an early collapse to post 254/4 at stumps on Day 1 of the Ranji Trophy final against Kerala at the VCA Stadium.

Vidarbha found themselves in trouble at 24/3 after Kerala’s pacers, led by MD Nidheesh (2/33), struck thrice in the first session. However, Nair and Malewar displayed remarkable resilience, consuming 414 deliveries to steady the innings and provide a solid foundation for the hosts.

Just as Nair seemed poised for a well-deserved century, a moment of miscommunication saw him run out for 86. Attempting a non-existent single after a misfield, both batters hesitated, allowing Rohan Kunnummal to effect a sharp throw that caught Nair short of his crease. Frustrated, the seasoned batter could only throw his bat in disappointment.

Despite the setback, the 21-year-old Malewar continued his fine form, remaining unbeaten on 138 off 259 deliveries, laced with 14 boundaries and two sixes. His innings further cemented his reputation after impressive performances in the knockout stages.

Earlier, Kerala's bowlers made the most of a green-top surface, with Nidheesh striking on the second ball of the match to trap Parth Rekhade lbw. Eden Apple Tom then dismissed Dhruv Shorey (16), who nicked one behind to a diving Mohammed Azharuddeen.

With Malewar still at the crease, Vidarbha will look to build on their strong recovery on Day 2, while Kerala will hope for early breakthroughs with the second new ball.

Brief Scores:
Vidarbha 254/4 in 86 overs (Danish Malewar 138*, Karun Nair 86; MD Nidheesh 2/33) vs Kerala.
