New Delhi, April 1 — Podcaster and YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as BeerBiceps, has submitted an undertaking in the Supreme Court promising to uphold decency in his shows, as legal proceedings continue over controversial remarks made in a YouTube episode.
Undertaking Filed, Passport Release Requested
Senior advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, representing Allahbadia, informed a bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh that his client had filed the undertaking and joined the ongoing investigation.Chandrachud also urged the court to modify an earlier condition requiring Allahbadia to deposit his passport, stating it was severely impacting his professional commitments. The advocate argued that international travel is essential for Allahbadia, who often conducts in-person interviews with guests abroad and holds multiple preparatory meetings.
Court Concerns and Investigation Timeline
The bench expressed concern that allowing Allahbadia to travel overseas could hinder the progress of the investigation. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Maharashtra and Assam governments, said that although no formal instructions were received, the probe was expected to conclude within two weeks.Acknowledging this, the court stated it would reconsider the request for passport release after the two-week period.
Background of the Case
On March 3, the Supreme Court granted Allahbadia permission to resume his popular podcast, The Ranveer Show, on the condition that its content adheres to “morality and decency” and is appropriate for audiences of all ages.Allahbadia was booked for controversial statements regarding parents and sex made during fellow comic Samay Raina’s YouTube show, India’s Got Latent. On February 18, the court granted him interim protection from arrest but criticised his remarks as "vulgar," asserting they reflected a "dirty mind" that shamed society.
Alongside Allahbadia and Raina, other comedians named in the case filed in Assam include Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, and Apoorva Makhija.
