CM Rekha Gupta Reflects on Her DU Journey, Emphasizes Vision for Education from 'KG to PG'

New Delhi, April 4 — Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday assured that no work related to Delhi University (DU) would face obstruction due to the city government, as she called for strengthening educational tourism across India.

Speaking at a felicitation ceremony organized in her honour at Delhi University, Gupta fondly reflected on her journey from a student activist to Delhi’s Chief Minister. She credited her alma mater, Daulat Ram College, for shaping her leadership skills and setting her on the path to public service.

From Student Activism to Leadership

Rekha Gupta shared her early experiences at DU, recalling how a year-long strike during her first year in 1993 led her to connect with representatives of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU). This engagement introduced her to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which eventually paved the way for her election as DUSU president in her final year.

“I used to organize political events across DU colleges while riding a scooty,” Gupta recalled. “I never imagined I would be responsible for the very roads I once travelled as a student.”

She also reflected on her protests and activism, including encounters with Maurice Nagar Police Station, humorously noting, “I never thought I’d be talking to the same officers years later in an entirely different role.”

Vision for Education and Tourism

Gupta emphasized her commitment to supporting DU’s development and stated she would carry out her responsibilities toward the university with complete dedication. Highlighting the potential of Delhi as an educational hub, she said, “We must enhance educational tourism so students from abroad can come here to receive quality education.”

She reiterated the need to improve the education system from kindergarten to postgraduate levels, stating, “A child should not face any difficulty in their education journey, from KG to PG.”

DU and Government to Work Hand-in-Hand

Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh, who presided over the event, expressed optimism about collaborative efforts between DU and the Delhi government. He praised Gupta’s rise from student to chief minister as a proud moment for the university.

“It is a matter of pride that a DU student, Rekha Gupta, has become the Chief Minister of Delhi,” Singh said. “Her journey from student, to DUSU president, to councillor, and now CM, is an inspiration, especially for female students.”

He also highlighted DU’s progressive initiatives, including reserved admission seats for single girl children and orphan students.

An Emotional Homecoming

Gupta later visited the Daulat Ram College campus, where she was warmly welcomed. “I feel humbled by this facilitation. This university has groomed so many students like me,” she said.

With her strong emotional ties to DU and a clear focus on inclusive education and tourism, Chief Minister Gupta’s speech resonated deeply with students and faculty alike, marking a new chapter in the collaboration between the university and the Delhi government.
