ReNew Power to Invest ₹22,000 Crore in India’s Largest Renewable Energy Complex in Andhra Pra...webp

Vijayawada, May 12 – ReNew Power, one of India’s foremost green energy companies, is set to make a major comeback in Andhra Pradesh with a ₹22,000 crore investment to build the country’s largest renewable energy complex in Anantapur. This development signals a renewed trust in the state following a five-year investment hiatus.

Massive Renewable Infrastructure Planned

ReNew Power’s ambitious project will comprise a 1,800 megawatt (MW) solar power plant, a 1,000 MW wind energy facility, and a 2 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS). Additionally, the company will construct a 100-kilometre extra-high voltage (EVH) transmission line to facilitate the delivery of clean power generated from the complex.

The project will be implemented in two phases. The first phase includes:
  • 587 MW of solar capacity
  • 250.8 MW of wind capacity
  • 415 megawatt-hour (MWh) BESS
The remaining capacity will be developed in subsequent stages.

The project's groundbreaking is scheduled for May 16, and Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh is expected to attend.

Strategic Re-entry After Policy Setback

This marks ReNew Power’s return to Andhra Pradesh after a pause since 2019, when the previous Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government launched a controversial review of power purchase agreements (PPAs) with renewable energy firms. That move affected around 5.2 GW of green energy projects, including ReNew’s 777 MW venture, and led to legal battles involving major companies such as ACME Solar, Greenko Holding, and Azure Power.

As a result, no new renewable capacity was added in Andhra Pradesh between 2019 and 2024.

Policy Shift and Renewed Confidence

The current government, led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, has prioritized attracting investments and restoring industry confidence. The approval of ReNew’s project under the state’s integrated clean energy policy, launched in October 2024, reflects this shift.

Industry experts view ReNew Power’s renewed investment as a significant vote of confidence in the new administration’s approach to clean energy and industrial policy.

Once completed, the project will beIndia’s largest renewable energy complex, reinforcing Andhra Pradesh’s strategic importance in the country’s clean energy roadmap.
