February 12, New Delhi – The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill requiring proof of citizenship for voters in the November midterm elections, sparking sharp criticism from Democrats.
Lawmakers voted 218 to 213 to approve the SAVE America Act, with only one Democrat supporting the Republican-backed measure.
The bill will now move to the Senate, where it is unlikely to secure the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster.
The legislation would require proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote and impose criminal penalties on election officials who register voters without the required documentation.
Republicans also added a requirement for photo identification for voters casting ballots in person or by mail in future federal elections.
Meanwhile, Democrats argue the bill could make it harder for millions of Americans to vote, particularly those without easy access to passports or birth certificates.
