New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) – Student filmmaker Rhea Shukla’s short film Ruse is set to make its world premiere in the prestigious Generation Kplus segment at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. The highly anticipated festival will take place in Berlin from February 13 to February 23.
Born in New Delhi, Shukla, 29, is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Screenwriting and Direction at Columbia University, New York. Expressing her excitement over the film’s journey, she shared her gratitude for collaborating with young yet fearless creatives.
"I am grateful I found the right collaborators who were young and yet unafraid and took ownership of the scenes in various ways. It comes across rather sublime on celluloid on a humming monsoon afternoon," Shukla told PTI.
A Tale of Unspoken Emotions
The short film Ruse follows three adolescent girls rehearsing a dance routine on a rainy afternoon. As they move together, their proximity gives rise to unspoken emotions and silent gazes, forming the crux of the film’s delicate narrative.According to the official synopsis, "The proximity to each other takes on a life of its own, an unarticulated desire, a nuanced portrayal of the silent gazes and unspoken gestures between the girls which comes across acutely on the screen."
Berlinale’s Generation Kplus: A Platform for Young Voices
The Generation Kplus section at Berlinale showcases films that explore the world through the eyes of children and teenagers, providing a platform for emerging and established filmmakers to depict youth-centered narratives.Shukla’s Notable Work in Cinema
Prior to Ruse, Shukla worked as a creative producer on Madhu, a film that premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and Lincoln Center's MoMA, later earning a Special Mention Jury Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.She also directed the music video "I Wanna Be Like You" for the Norwegian music group Ora the Molecule.
