Guwahati, Feb 26: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced on Wednesday that infrastructure projects worth ₹80,000 crore will soon commence in Assam. These projects include key developments such as a tunnel under the Brahmaputra River, an elevated corridor at Kaziranga National Park, and the Guwahati Ring Road.

Addressing the Advantage Assam 2.0 business summit virtually, Gadkari stated that road projects worth ₹3 lakh crore under his ministry are set to be completed in Assam by 2029. Currently, work on projects worth ₹60,000 crore is already underway in various stages of completion. These ongoing initiatives aim to enhance connectivity within Assam and improve road links with neighboring states like Tripura and Nagaland.

Among the major upcoming projects is the ₹15,000-crore Brahmaputra tunnel, which will connect Numaligarh and Dholpur, a ₹6,000-crore elevated corridor at Kaziranga National Park, and the much-anticipated Guwahati Ring Road. Additionally, the multi-modal logistics hub at Jogighopa is nearing completion and is expected to be operational soon.

Gadkari highlighted Assam’s potential in the bamboo-based industry, particularly in fuel manufacturing and economic development. He assured that almost all infrastructure projects requested by the Assam government have been approved by his ministry.

Stressing the importance of capital investment, Gadkari noted that economic growth and employment opportunities depend on large-scale infrastructure development. He reiterated the central government’s commitment to the development of the Northeast, pointing out the significant investments made in the region since 2014 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"Infrastructure is essential for the state's progress. Improved connectivity will benefit multiple sectors, leading to overall economic growth," Gadkari added.
