New Delhi, February 12 The government has mandated several measures, particularly focused on braking systems, to enhance the safety of medium and heavy-duty vehicles, Parliament was informed on Thursday.
To improve the evaluation of braking performance, a revised braking standard has been mandated for trucks, effective October 1, 2027.
Earlier, this standard was applicable only to buses built by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Union Minister Nitin Jairam Gadkari said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
Braking systems have been enhanced with the mandatory implementation of electronic stability control systems (AIS 162) for trucks, effective October 1, 2027, which provides stability, especially during braking on curves, the Minister for Road, Transport and Highways informed the Lower House.
Furthermore, the Advanced Emergency Braking System (AIS 162) has been made mandatory, which provides for automatic braking in the event of the driver failing to respond to emergency situations, either to avoid a collision with obstacles in front or to reduce the impact of a collision.
Additionally, the Lane Departure Warning System has been made mandatory from January 2028, which provides a warning if a vehicle deviates from its expected course of movement. Furthermore, to reduce driver fatigue, the mandatory fitment of air conditioning in truck cabins has been mandated under the CMVR, effective October 2025, Gadkari said.
