Major boost for suburban rail infrastructure as MUTP gets record allocation in Union Budget 2025-26
Mumbai, May 17—The ambitious Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) received a significant financial boost in the Union Budget for 2025-26, with total grants amounting to ₹1,777 crore. This marks a substantial 125 percent increase from the ₹789 crore allocated in the previous fiscal year, according to a statement by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) on Saturday.Breakdown of Allocation and Funding Partnership
The Ministry of Railways has earmarked:- ₹100 crore for MUTP-II
- ₹800 crore for MUTP-III
- ₹877 crore for MUTP-IIIA
Projects Underway and Financial Continuity
Three major projects under the MUTP umbrella are currently at various execution stages, while the World Bank-funded MUTP-I has already been completed. MRVC clarified that financial support was uninterrupted during the 2024-25 fiscal year, allowing work to proceed without delays.Additionally, the corporation noted that extra funds are usually made available through revised budgetary allocations in the final quarter of the financial year, if required, to ensure seamless progress.
Focus on Expansion, Connectivity, and Commuter Experience
Backed by this substantial financial commitment, the MUTP initiative aims to:- Introduce new rail corridors
- Upgrade existing railway stations
- Enhance rail infrastructure
With continued support from the central and state governments, MRVC stated that Mumbai’s suburban rail network is on track for a major transformation, offering long-term benefits for urban mobility in the city.
