Lucknow, February 28 – The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Friday raised concerns over the imprisonment of its MLA, Zahid Beg, in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, demanding his release. The issue was brought up on the seventh day of the Budget Session by SP MLA Dr. R.K. Verma under Rule-300, which allows discussion on urgent matters.
Dr. Verma alleged that Beg was incarcerated based on a "fabricated" complaint and evidence in connection with a maid’s suicide case. He insisted that the legislator should have been present for the session and criticized the police for their "double standards" in handling the case.
Citing examples of other incarcerated SP leaders, including former minister Azam Khan and ex-MLA Irfan Solanki, Verma questioned whether being a Samajwadi Party MLA or a Muslim was a "crime" under the current administration.
Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey urged the government to conduct an impartial investigation into the matter.
However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna countered the claims, stating that the case was sub-judice and should not be debated in the Assembly. He further dismissed allegations of bias, asserting that the government does not discriminate based on caste or political affiliations.
The controversy stems from an incident in September last year when the body of a maid was found at Beg’s private residence in Bhadohi district. Authorities registered two FIRs against the SP MLA, his wife, and his son in connection with the case.
As the debate over Beg’s imprisonment continues, political tensions between the ruling government and the opposition remain high.
