Kolkata, Feb 3 (PTI) – Saraswati Puja celebrations at Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College in south Kolkata were held under strict police supervision on Monday, following a directive from the Calcutta High Court.
The court's intervention came after a dispute between two groups over the organization of the puja on the college campus. While one faction performed the rituals inside the institution, the other conducted the celebrations on the road outside. To ensure a peaceful observance, law enforcement officials were deployed at the site.
The puja was originally conducted on Sunday, but additional rituals continued on Monday across various schools, colleges, libraries, and households throughout West Bengal before the immersion of the idols.
State Education Minister Bratya Basu and South Kolkata TMC MP Mala Roy visited the law college on Sunday, taking stock of the situation amid heightened tensions.
In a similar instance, Saraswati Puja at a primary school in Haringhata, Nadia district, was also held under police presence. Women from two different communities stood outside the school, blowing conch shells, while students and teachers offered prayers to the Goddess of Learning inside the institution.
Devotees performed the morning rituals and later participated in traditional vegetarian feasts as part of the customary celebrations.
