Scenes Edited from Mohanlal's 'L2: Empuraan' Amid Political Controversy

Over Two Minutes Removed from the Film Following Backlash

Kochi, April 1 — Just days after Malayalam superstar Mohanlal promised to remove controversial segments from the recently released L2: Empuraan, producer Antony Perumbavoor confirmed on Tuesday that over two minutes of scenes have been cut from the film.

Addressing the media in Kochi, Perumbavoor clarified that the decision to edit the movie was made collectively by the core team, including Mohanlal, director-actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, and the producers. He emphasized that the move was not due to fear or political pressure.

“There is no question of being afraid. We live in a society and never intended to hurt anyone’s sentiments. As filmmakers, if someone is unhappy, it’s our responsibility to address it,” said Perumbavoor.
He reiterated that the cuts were made voluntarily, not under any coercion, and said the team would take similar actions in future if genuine grievances arise — regardless of political affiliation.

Political Backlash and Industry Response

The film has come under fire primarily from the Sangh Parivar, who have condemned certain scenes perceived to criticize right-wing politics and subtly reference the Gujarat riots. The backlash began on March 27, the day of the film’s release, with the group launching a scathing social media campaign.

However, the film has also received widespread support from across the political spectrum, including endorsements from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan, both defending the creative freedom of the team.

Despite this backing, BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar publicly announced that he would not watch the film, expressing disappointment over its content.

Mohanlal Expresses Regret

On Sunday, Mohanlal broke his silence, expressing regret over the controversy and affirming that the contentious scenes would be removed.

Meanwhile, director Major Ravi stirred further debate by alleging that Mohanlal had not watched the film before its release. The actor has not responded to this claim.

A Third Installment in the Works

Perumbavoor also confirmed that the team is committed to moving forward, with plans already in place for a third sequel in the Lucifer franchise.

“There is no need to attack Prithviraj over this,” he added, calling for civility and unity within the creative community.
L2: Empuraan, the highly anticipated second installment in the Lucifer trilogy, continues to spark national discussion — not just for its storyline, but for the cultural and political conversations it has ignited.
