High-Risk Wards Under Intense Surveillance; Mobile Jammers Upgraded
New Delhi, May 12 — Authorities have significantly ramped up security at Tihar Jail in response to the current security climate, with particular attention on high-risk wards housing notorious gangsters and terror suspects, according to jail officials.
The enhanced measures include multi-layered security checks, upgraded CCTV surveillance, and stricter monitoring protocols aimed at reinforcing safety within one of India’s largest and most sensitive prison complexes.
“The recent developments have prompted complete security checks. All vulnerable spots are being reinforced, and round-the-clock surveillance of inmates with serious criminal backgrounds is heightened,” a senior official said.
Focus on High-Profile Inmates and Tech Upgrades
Among the inmates under scrutiny are high-profile figures such as Tahawwur Rana, Chhota Rajan, and Neeraj Bawana, all lodged in the facility known for housing some of India’s most dangerous criminals.Mobile signal jammers are being tested and upgraded to prevent unauthorised communications. Officials revealed that three surprise checks are conducted daily in sensitive barracks to ensure strict compliance with jail norms.
Night Security and Intelligence Coordination Intensified
Security personnel deployment has been increased during night hours, and inmate movements are now under tighter observation. The internal intelligence network within the prison has been activated, and informers are tasked with immediately reporting any suspicious activity.Additionally, coordination between Tihar Jail’s internal administration and external law enforcement agencies has been intensified.
“We are sharing inputs regularly with the special cell and other investigative wings to ensure that no external influence is able to penetrate jail security,” an official noted.
Long-Term Security Review Underway
The heightened security measures will remain in force until a full-scale review is conducted.Established in 1958, the Tihar complex comprises nine prisons, including one in Rohini and six in Mandoli, spanning over 400 acres. Its vast layout and sensitive inmate population make it a focal point for national prison security strategy.
The current overhaul reflects an urgent response to growing concerns about internal and external threats to the facility.
