Security for Pakistani prisoners in Bengal Correctional Homes tightened.webp

Three-Layer Security Cordons Implemented Across State’s Correctional Homes

Kolkata, May 10 — Amid escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan, security has been significantly tightened for Pakistani inmates housed in various correctional homes across West Bengal, according to senior government officials.

Chandranath Sinha, Minister-in-Charge of the Department of Correctional Administration, confirmed the heightened measures, noting that the state constantly reviews and upgrades security around these prisoners to prevent any untoward incidents.

“Security around these prisoners (Pakistanis) is always something extra compared to what we have for other prisoners. This is to avoid any kind of untoward incident,” Sinha stated, emphasizing the continuous monitoring by senior officers.
According to Additional Director General of Correctional Services, Laxmi Narayan Meena, there are currently 10 Pakistani nationals lodged in correctional facilities across the state.

Heightened Vigilance and Restricted Movements

A senior official revealed that a three-tier security arrangement has been implemented specifically for these prisoners. While they are generally permitted to interact with other inmates, such privileges may now be curtailed to ensure their safety in the current sensitive environment.

“They are allowed to mix with other prisoners. But going by the sensitivity of the situation, they may be barred from doing that, particularly keeping in mind their security,” the official noted.
Among the ten prisoners are two individuals classified as terrorists: Mohammed Mosiuddin alias Musa and Shahbaz Ismail. The authorities are maintaining a heightened state of vigilance around them.

59 Correctional Homes Under Surveillance

West Bengal currently operates 59 correctional homes, which include:
  • 7 Central Correctional Homes
  • 3 Open Correctional Homes
  • 5 Special Correctional Homes
  • 1 Women’s Correctional Home
  • 12 District Correctional Homes
  • 31 Sub-Correctional Homes
Officials have reiterated their commitment to reassessing the situation as needed to maintain order and ensure the safety of all inmates.

“The vigilance would continue for the sake of the protection of these prisoners. In case of any need, we will review it and take necessary steps,” an official affirmed.
As cross-border tensions remain high, West Bengal's correctional administration is taking every possible measure to maintain peace and prevent any security breaches within its facilities.
