Senior Congress Leader Sooranad Rajasekharan Passes Away at 75

Kochi, April 11 – Senior Congress leader and revered journalist Sooranad Rajasekharan passed away on Friday at a private hospital in Kochi. He was 75 and had been undergoing treatment for cancer.


Rajasekharan was a key member of the political affairs committee of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). Known for his unwavering commitment to the Congress ideology, he was widely respected across political and literary circles for his multifaceted contributions as a political strategist, writer, journalist, and researcher.


His final rites will be held this evening at his residence in Chathannoor, Kollam district.


Condolences Pour In​


Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan, and senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala expressed deep sorrow over Rajasekharan’s demise.


In a heartfelt message on Facebook, Satheesan described Rajasekharan as “a staunch Congressman who left his mark in various fields as an excellent organiser, collaborator, writer, journalist, and researcher.” He added, “He always had a smile on his face in any difficult situation or time of crisis. That smile has faded.”


Ramesh Chennithala recalled Rajasekharan’s significant influence within the party, mourning the loss of a strong pillar of Congress. He also revealed that Rajasekharan had been selected for the Ramachandran Memorial Award, instituted by the Kollam Press Club for outstanding contributions to journalism. The award ceremony was scheduled for April 23.


“I was invited to present the award, but Rajasekharan said goodbye without waiting to receive it,” Chennithala wrote in his condolence message.


A Literary and Editorial Legacy​


Apart from his political career, Rajasekharan was known for his deep command of the Malayalam language. His editorial acumen led him to serve as the Managing Editor of Veekshanam, a Congress-affiliated newspaper, where he played a pivotal role in shaping its voice and influence.


Rajasekharan leaves behind a legacy of integrity, intellectual depth, and unwavering dedication to public service and journalism.
