Pakistan endured a disastrous campaign in the home event, failing to secure a single victory. They suffered a heavy 60-run defeat against New Zealand in Karachi, followed by a six-wicket loss to arch-rivals India in Dubai. Hopes of a comeback were dashed when their match against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi was abandoned due to rain.
Senior Players Considering Withdrawal
Pakistan is set to play five T20Is and three ODIs in New Zealand from March 16 to April 5. However, key players including Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah are reportedly considering making themselves unavailable.“These players are aware that they might be dropped as selectors aim to introduce fresh faces. As a result, they are contemplating stepping away from the tour and are in discussions with their agents regarding the next move,” a source stated.
Meanwhile, the future of Muhammad Rizwan also remains uncertain. There are speculations that selectors may recommend a squad overhaul ahead of the Asia Cup later this year and the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
Aaqib Javed's Future Role in PCB
In another development, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering a new role for Aaqib Javed at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore.Javed, who served as Pakistan's interim head coach, had earlier requested PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi for a position at the academy. His tenure as interim coach has now ended, and discussions are underway to appoint him to a senior position at the NCA.
“With Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie stepping down, PCB asked Aaqib to take over as interim coach. Now that the Champions Trophy is over for Pakistan, the board will likely move him to the academy while keeping him as a national selector,” the source added.
Final decisions regarding the squad and coaching staff are expected in the coming weeks as PCB focuses on rebuilding ahead of major international tournaments.
