Amritsar, March 3 — The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Akal Takht have strongly condemned the violent attack on a Sikh businessman and his brother in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. The assault, which involved the vandalization of their showroom by a mob, has raised serious concerns among the Sikh community.
The SGPC, the apex body overseeing gurdwaras, has called on Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to take immediate and decisive action against those responsible. In a letter to the Chief Minister, SGPC chief secretary Kulwant Singh Mannan expressed outrage over the incident, which was captured in a video clip circulating online.
The footage shows the mob physically attacking the Sikh traders and pelting stones at their showroom, causing extensive damage. In a particularly disturbing act of sacrilege, the attackers allegedly removed the turban of one of the victims and desecrated his 'Kes' (unshorn hair), which is a sacred part of Sikh identity.
Mannan emphasized the SGPC's commitment to supporting the victims, offering both moral and legal assistance. He urged the Uttarakhand government and police to launch a swift and transparent investigation, ensuring that all culprits are brought to justice.
In addition to the SGPC's condemnation, the Akal Takht, the highest temporal authority of the Sikh community, also expressed its strong disapproval. Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh called on the Punjab government to take up the matter with Uttarakhand authorities to ensure appropriate legal action is taken.
Prominent political figures have also weighed in on the issue. Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal described the attack as "disturbing" and emphasized the violation of the victims' rights and dignity. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she urged Chief Minister Dhami to take swift and strict action against the culprits, stressing the need for heightened protection of the Sikh community in Uttarakhand. She also highlighted the potential threat to national unity posed by such incidents, calling for greater efforts to promote tolerance and understanding.
Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa also condemned the attack, standing in solidarity with the victims and the Sikh community at large.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with calls from various Sikh organizations and political leaders to ensure the safety and security of the minority Sikh community in Uttarakhand.
