Dubai, Feb 27: Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan has lauded Rohit Sharma’s evolution as a leader, highlighting his ability to manage pressure situations and foster strong team camaraderie. Dhawan, who shared a formidable opening partnership with Rohit for nearly a decade, believes the Mumbai batter’s maturity and leadership skills bode well for the Indian team.
Speaking on The Shikhar Dhawan Experience, a special series on Star Sports and JioHotstar, Dhawan emphasized how Rohit has grown into his role as captain.
“From 2013 to 2025, twelve years of experience is a lot. Rohit has been through various situations and understands how to handle pressure and unite the team. As a leader, he knows when to be lenient and when to be strict. His bond with the boys is fantastic, and we are in a great position,” Dhawan remarked.
MS Dhoni’s Role in Forming the Iconic Opening Pair
Reflecting on his own career, Dhawan recalled how MS Dhoni was instrumental in pairing him with Rohit as an opener during the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.“The decision was made just half a day before the match. At that time, I was making a comeback, and Rohit was asked to open by Dhoni. We didn’t think too much about it, but we had a great start, reaching 100 without losing a wicket. That tournament marked the beginning of a special partnership,” he said.
A Bond Beyond Cricket
Dhawan also spoke about his personal connection with Rohit Sharma, which dates back to their junior cricket days.Meanwhile, India, having secured two wins in as many matches, have already booked their place in the Champions Trophy semifinals. They will face New Zealand in their final group-stage match on Sunday in Dubai.“Our trust and understanding were always strong, both on and off the field. We celebrated series wins together and shared countless memories. I have known Rohit since he was 16-17 years old, and we have been friends since our Under-19 World Cup days.”
