Pune, March 4: Shiv Sena activists staged a strong protest in Pune on Tuesday against the brutal murder of Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, demanding capital punishment for those responsible for the crime.
The protest, spearheaded by Pramod Bhangire, Shiv Sena's Pune unit president, saw demonstrators expressing their anger by burning an effigy of Walmik Karad. Karad, known to be closely associated with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Dhananjay Munde, has already been arrested in connection with an extortion case linked to Deshmukh's murder.
Speaking at the demonstration, Bhangire stated, "Deshmukh was brutally murdered. We demand capital punishment for the perpetrators." The protest underscores the growing public outrage following the horrific details revealed in the chargesheet, including distressing photographs and descriptions of extreme brutality committed against Deshmukh before his death.
The incident has also resulted in significant political fallout. Earlier today, Dhananjay Munde, Maharashtra's Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, resigned from his cabinet position amid mounting pressure from opposition parties demanding accountability and action against those involved.
Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh was reportedly abducted, tortured, and killed on December 9 last year after he intervened to stop an extortion attempt targeting a local energy company.
The case continues to draw widespread attention, with the Shiv Sena leading the charge for swift and severe justice.
