Signal glitch near Mumbai hits Central Railway's local train services

Mumbai, Feb 4 (PTI) – Mumbai's suburban train services on the Central Railway's main line faced significant disruptions on Tuesday morning following a technical snag in the signalling system, officials confirmed.

The issue, which arose at 4:55 am on the south-bound slow track between Diva and Mumbra stations in Thane district, caused delays of at least 15-20 minutes for several local trains. Given that suburban trains serve as Mumbai’s lifeline, the disruption led to heavy crowding on trains and platforms, inconveniencing thousands of commuters.

Central Railway's Chief Public Relations Officer, Swapnil Nila, stated that the signalling issue was rectified around 6:00 am, over an hour after the problem was detected. Despite the restoration, the delays had already led to a ripple effect, affecting train schedules and increasing congestion across the network.

The Central Railway operates around 1,800 local train services daily, catering to more than 35 lakh passengers across its main line, harbour, trans-harbour, and Belapur-Uran corridors. The main line stretches from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in south Mumbai to Kasara in Thane, extending further to Khopoli and Karjat in Raigad district.

The unexpected disruption underscored the challenges faced by Mumbai's daily commuters, with a commuter activist highlighting the hardships endured due to the delay. While services were restored, residual delays impacted travel through the morning rush hour, adding to the woes of office-goers and students.
