Delhi has witnessed a significant decline in fire-related deaths, with fatalities decreasing by 74 percent between January 1 and February 24 this year compared to the same period last year, according to recent data provided by the Delhi Fire Services (DFS).

In a marked improvement, only eight fire-related deaths were recorded until February 24 this year, compared to 31 fatalities during the corresponding period in the previous year. January saw six deaths this year, a drastic reduction from the 15 deaths reported in January last year. Similarly, just two fatalities occurred till February 24, 2025, compared to 16 deaths by this date last year.

Decrease in Fire Incidents, but February Sees a Slight Rise in Calls

DFS data highlighted a reduction in overall fire calls received in January, with numbers dropping from 1,204 last year to 938 this year. However, the trend reversed slightly in February, with 932 calls recorded in the first 24 days this year, up from 834 calls during the same period last year.

Combined fire-related calls to DFS saw a similar pattern. January's total calls declined from 2,502 in the previous year to 2,183 in 2025. In contrast, calls received up to February 24 increased slightly from 1,766 last year to 1,811 this year.

DFS Efforts Continue to Save Lives, Animals, and Birds

Despite the fluctuating call volume, the DFS's efforts to save lives and manage emergencies remain commendable. In January 2025, 38 people were either saved or injured during fire incidents, down from 51 in January 2024. Yet, till February 24 this year, the number increased to 42 people saved or injured compared to 34 during the same period last year.

Regarding overall rescues, the fire department saved 176 individuals in January this year, compared to 182 last year. However, rescues in February dropped from 209 individuals last year to 137 this year until February 24.

Additionally, the DFS rescued 490 animals by February 24, slightly fewer than the 509 rescued during the same period last year. Bird rescues also saw a decline, with 351 birds saved this year compared to 435 during the same timeframe in 2024.

Garbage-related fire incidents remained nearly unchanged, with 387 calls received this year until February 24, down slightly from 392 calls last year.

The DFS continues to actively respond and manage fire-related emergencies, demonstrating their critical role in protecting lives and property in Delhi.
