A recent survey has revealed that a staggering 87% of Indian citizens believe their personal information has already been leaked or compromised and is publicly available online. Conducted by online community platform LocalCircles, this extensive survey gathered responses from over 36,000 individuals spread across 375 districts in India, spanning from August 25 to February 28.
Aadhaar and PAN Card Details Most Commonly Compromised
According to the findings, more than half of the respondents indicated that sensitive identification documents, specifically their Aadhaar and PAN card details, have been leaked or compromised. When asked about potential sources responsible for the data breach, citizens overwhelmingly pointed fingers at prominent sectors:- 65% blamed telecom service providers.
- 63% held eCommerce platforms and websites accountable.

- 50% cited state and local government offices, databases, or staff.
- 48% mentioned payment apps or websites.
- 37% accused other businesses and entities.
- 26% believed that educational institutions were responsible.
