Gangtok, Feb 3 (PTI) – In a significant step towards strengthening the education system, the Sikkim Education Department distributed free textbooks and uniforms to students across all government schools on the first day of the new academic session, officials reported.
A total of 40,968 students from 767 government schools benefitted from this initiative, ensuring they begin the academic year with essential learning materials.
"The government of Sikkim has successfully provided free textbooks and uniforms to all government school students, reaffirming its commitment to accessible and quality education," an education department official stated.
The initiative extended to monastic schools and Sanskrit pathshalas, emphasizing an inclusive approach to education in the state. To ensure smooth execution, senior officials, including the Education Secretary, Principal Director, and District CEOs, were deployed across schools. They actively participated in the distribution process and attended first-day 'zero period' sessions, engaging with both students and teachers.
This marks the second consecutive year of the Sikkim government implementing this free distribution program, alleviating financial burdens on families and promoting equitable access to education. Officials highlighted that such efforts play a crucial role in enhancing the state's education system and fostering a better learning environment for all students.
