Snow Sports Competition Coming to Gulmarg.webp


Gulmarg will host the sixth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games from February 23 to 26, with around 400 athletes set to compete in snow sports.

February 13, Srinagar: The dates for the Gulmarg leg of the Khelo India Winter Games 2026 have been announced, with competitions scheduled from February 23 to 26. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, made the announcement, confirming that Gulmarg will host the sixth edition of the Winter Games.

The snow-covered slopes of Gulmarg will host the second phase of the Khelo India Winter Games 2026, featuring snow sports competitions. The first phase, which focused on ice sports, was held from January 20 to 26 in Leh, Ladakh.

Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya said the Gulmarg leg is being organized at a time when the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina 2026 have recently concluded, describing it as a significant opportunity. He expressed confidence that, as seen in Leh, Jammu and Kashmir will witness strong enthusiasm, with athletes competing in challenging weather conditions.

In Gulmarg, Baramulla Deputy Commissioner Minga Sherpa convened a meeting with officials to review preparations for the event.

Around 400 athletes from across the country are expected to participate in events including ski mountaineering, alpine skiing, Nordic skiing (cross-country) and snowboarding. The highest participation is anticipated in alpine skiing.

Assistant Director of the Tourism Department, Gulmarg, Tahir Wani said ski slopes are being prepared and necessary machinery has been readied for the competitions.
