Hyderabad, Feb 4 (PTI) – The Telangana Assembly was adjourned until 2 PM on Sunday after the government requested more time, citing an ongoing cabinet meeting. Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar announced the adjournment soon after the session commenced.
Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu informed the House that the cabinet meeting, which began earlier in the morning, was still in progress, and additional time was needed to finalize the meeting minutes before presenting them to the Assembly.
The state cabinet convened to discuss the recently conducted caste survey before tabling it for legislative debate. However, the adjournment sparked criticism from the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), with legislators accusing the government of disrespecting the Assembly.
Senior BRS leader and former minister Niranjan Reddy expressed his discontent, calling the situation unprecedented. "This has never happened in history. Adjourning the House without any business being conducted is an insult to both the members and the Assembly," he stated.
He further pointed out that the government had earlier communicated that the cabinet meeting would begin at 10 AM, followed by the Assembly session at 11 AM.
The caste survey, conducted by the state planning department, was submitted to a cabinet sub-committee led by Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on February 2. The findings revealed that Backward Classes (BCs), excluding Muslim minorities, form the largest demographic group in Telangana, accounting for 46.25% of the state's total population of 3.70 crore.
Other key statistics from the survey include Scheduled Castes (SCs) at 17.43%, Scheduled Tribes (STs) at 10.45%, backward classes among Muslims at 10.08%, Other Castes (OCs) at 13.31%, and OCs among Muslims at 2.48%.
The adjournment has further fueled political tensions, with the opposition questioning the government's preparedness and approach toward critical legislative discussions.
